ROME HOSPITAL’S ADULT STEM CELL BANK SEEKING TO OFFER ETHICAL ALTERNATIVE

pdf

Patrick Goodenough “Baptist Press” January 4, 2001

“A Roman Catholic medical institution in Rome is launching a placenta and umbilical cord bank to provide stem cells for medical purposes, the Internet news site CNSNews.com reported Jan. 4. The initiative will offer an ethical alternative to using fertilized human eggs for medical research…”

PLACENTAL AND PREGNANCY STEM CELLS EVERYONE IS, OR SHOULD BE, INTERESTED IN THE PLACENTA

pdf

Curtis L. Cetrulo,MD and Kyle J. Cetrulo,* Guest Editors “Stem Cell Reviews” Volume 2, 2006

“The placenta is indeed a miraculous organ. Not only does it provide nutrition in the form of amino acids and glucose to the developing embryo and fetus in the form of amino acids and glucose, but it also acts as an organ of respiration providing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide. It is also an excretory organ. One of the most amazing things about the placenta is its role in stem cell physiology, a role which is only recently being studied and is presented in this issue of Stem Cell Reviews…”

A FLUID MEANS OF STEM CELLS GENERATION

pdf

Alan Trounson “Nature Biotechnology” Vol.25 No.1 January 2007

“Stem cells in amniotic fluid may represent an attractive alternative to embryonic and adult stem cells…”

ISOLATION OF AMNIOTIC STEM CELL LINES WITH POTENTIAL FOR THERAPY

pdf

Paolo De Coppi, Georg Bartsch, Jr, M Minhaj Siddiqui, Tao Xu, Cesar C Santos, Laura Perin, Gustavo Mostoslavsky, Angeline C Serre, Evan Y Snyder, James J Yoo, Mark E Furth, Shay Soker & Anthony Atala “Nature Biotechnology” 25, 100-106 (2007)

“We report the isolation of human and rodent amniotic fluid-derived stem (AFS) cells that express embryonic and adult stem cell markers. Undifferentiated AFS cells expand extensively without feeders, double in 36 h and are not tumorigenic…”

STEM CELL CHARACTERISTICS OF AMNIOTIC EPITHELIAL CELLS

pdf

Toshio Miki, Thomas Lehmann, Hongbo Cai, Donna B. Stolz, Stephen C. Strom “Stem Cells” Vol. 23 No. 10 November 2005, pp. 1549 -1559

“Here we show that amniotic epithelial cells isolated from human term placenta express surface markers normally present on embryonic stem and germ cells.

Amniotic epithelial cells do not require other cell-derived feeder layers to maintain Oct-4 expression, do not express telomerase, and are nontumorigenic upon transplantation.
Amnion derived from term placenta after live birth may be a useful and noncontroversial source of stem cells for cell transplantation and regenerative medicine…”

STEM CELL ‘IMMORTALITY’ GENE FOUND

pdf

“Cell” Vol 113 p 643

“The key gene that keeps embryonic stem cells in a state of youthful immortality has been discovered. The breakthrough may one day contribute to turning ordinary adult cells into those with the properties of human ESCs. This would end the need to destroy embryos to harvest the cells for new medical treatments…”

THE MODULATION OF THE AGING PROCESS

pdf

Prof. Dr. G. Hofecker, Prof Dr. H. Niedermi)iler, Prof Dr. M. Skaticky Institute of Physiology, Ludwig-Boltzmann-institute of Experimental Gerontology, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna

“The effects of lyophilized fetal sheep testis and mesenchymal homogenates on aging changes were tested in a series of experiments in rats and mice. We conclude that fetal mesenchymal cells not only have a long term effect after using them for in vivo treatment, but also act immediately, possibly activating enzymes or changing membrane properties or by other mechanisms. This short term effect may be one of the factors enhancing longevity…”

STEM CELL PROCEDURES – THE NEXT BOTOX?

pdf

“Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago indicates that stem cell technology could be used to improve a number of cosmetic procedures, particularly treatments for wrinkles – currently one of the fastest growth areas for the cosmetic industry…”

WHAT IS COSMETIC STEM CELL THERAPY?

pdf

“Picture a day when breast reconstruction can be accomplished for mastectomy patients by the body’s ability to regrow breast tissue. Or a facial reconstruction that is done on severely burned patients with procedures other than painful skin grafts…”

WOUND HEALING EFFECTS OF PLACENTAL EXTRACTS ON RATS WITH THERMAL INJURY

pdf

“Application of 30 mg of placental extracts reduced the wound healing time by about 50%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to explore the molecular mechanisms of porcine placental extracts on wound healing…”
